Formation: A Juried Exhibition of the Guild of Book Workers

Formation includes 50 works by members of the Guild of Book Workers. These works span the genre of “book arts”, including artist books, fine bindings, and broadsides. The exhibition is juried by three outstanding artists and Guild members – Sarah Smith, Coleen Curry, and Graham Patten. The exhibition will travel to five locations around the country, beginning at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and closing at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. The annual Guild of Book Workers Standards of Excellence conference will coincide with the show being at MCBA, hopefully providing opportunity for added conversation and exposure of the world of book production to a larger community of people.

Forbes Library Reading Series - Nature: Word and Image

The Forbes Library’s author reading series, now in its third season, explores contemporary themes on the premise that libraries offer vibrant spaces to engage with and explore our era’s most pressing questions – questions that in their surprises and contradictions can be understood through either a realistic lens or through fantasy, science fiction and the surreal. The series invites the community to join us in examining how story and art can provide empathy and insight in our accelerating world.

The series features writers in genres ranging from fiction to nonfiction to poetry. The role of the image in conveying literary themes will be explored, too, in events on comics & graphic novels, film and screenwriting, and nature word-and-image pairings. Current issues from our political and social milieu will also form an important backbone as these authors share from their fine work.

I will be sharing my artist book, The Walk. Other presenters will include Bob Marshall, illustrator On Duck Pond, Naila Moreira, Forbes Library Writer-in-Residence, and Pam Petro, photographer Dusk at MacLeish.

Date: Wednesday, May 9, 2018

Time: 7 pm

Location: Forbes Library, Northampton, MA
